PREFACE
 |
If we have a glance at the past of our nation objectively, we will certainly come to know that Afghanistan remained under foreign influence for quite long period of time. There were many other reasons resulting injustices for the nation but weak governance was one of the main factors.
The vested interest of some groups played an important role to keep the people deprived from their basic rights of getting education and no or so participation in the decision making.
The deteriorated peace added to these human sufferings as at that time the cruelty, enmity and injustice reached to its climax. Talking about women Human Rights was far away even the men could not think to get their basic rights.
The vicious circle of poverty combined with gender inequality lead the people to sell their daughters as a result a large number of girls were forced to get married in a very early age.
The meaningless cultural norms also kept the women deprived of their basic rights as the lives of the majority of the people in Afghanistan are governed by customary laws rather than statutory laws.
Such things got worst during the three decades long war where the whole society was destroyed but the women affected more negatively.
But after the fall of Taliban regime, the interim government and then the present political setup gave comparatively conducive environment for development both for women and men. To sum up, the appalling situation of human suffering in Afghanistan is mostly due to decades of civil and imposed war and periodical natural disasters. Political instability and economic insecurity have caused massive physical and social catastrophe to the people of Afghanistan in general but
Afghan women and children in particular. However a number of cultural customs are also crucial causes of violence against women in Afghanistan.
In order to reduce the suffering of Afghan women and children, need for long-term reconstruction and development work to commence in Afghanistan was felt. Much of this work can be implemented by relatively small Afghan NGOs, which can become part of Afghan civil society organizations, together with contributions and inputs by international NGOs and UN agencies.
